I’m the type of person who dreams BIG. Every year I would create an ambitious (and impossible) list of things I wanted to accomplish. One example is: write and edit a novel. This is just one of many, many complex tasks on last years list. Here’s the thing, I’m a full time student and I enjoy having free time. So making a list with big tasks like that one was never realistic.
This year I am going in with a different mindset. I want to simplify everything, including my goals for the year. 2019 is going to be the year I actually follow through with and complete my “resolutions”.
This year I am focussing on the small things. The things that will get me one step closer to completing those big tasks. Habits, daily rituals, small goals, etc. At the end of the day one step closer is still better than no steps closer.
Last year I was easily able to complete my goal of reading 25 books. I know that I could probably read more than that this year, however I don’t want to overwhelm myself. I’ve decided to keep my goal at 25 books for this year too. The only difference is that I want to read diversely this year. Read genres that I don’t usually reach for. And read books that have been sitting on my shelf for years.
Last year was the first year I actually managed to start writing my novel. I got 20 000 words on paper before I realized that I wanted to take a different direction with the book. I’m really happy that I was able to get that far though. This year I want to focus on each aspect of fantasy writing separately. For the first few months, I’m working on world-building. And I’ll go from there. By the end of the year, if I’m lucky I’ll be able to write up an outline. But I’m not going to stress about that right now.
I’m also committing to blogging this year. In December, I created a schedule and a list of posts. I’m really excited to finally be posting regularly. I realized that in the past I wan’t blogging about the things that I wanted to write about. Those were things that I liked reading about. But I wanted to share something different on my blog. So stay tuned for more posts!
This year I want to focus on getting organized and better with my time management and procrastination. To do this I’m working on getting as much of my school work as possible done on the weekdays. And I’m also going to start my assignments early instead of writing them the night before they are due.
I want to create and implement a morning routine for myself. This will take some time of course. I already have a good nighttime routine that I came up with last year. And I find that if my mornings are a bit of a disaster the rest of my day usually is the same. So it’s really important for me to figure this out. Secondly, I am going to add more self care time into my day. My program in post secondary can be quite challenging and emotionally heavy at times leading to burn out. Therefore, this year I am going to make it a habit to include self care into my daily schedule.
One last note, this year I did another thing differently with the beginning of the year. I have given myself a grace period to get into the rhythm of the new year. There is always so much pressure on the first day of the year. Honestly, I spent all day January 1 watching a TV show on Netflix. And that’s okay! Starts don’t have to be perfect and they don’t have to be stressful either. I’m giving myself the freedom to work at my own pace and take days off.
I’m really excited to get started on all of these small goals and tasks. It’s nice to not feel stressed and overwhelmed with my “resolutions”.
